Who We Are
We at Zamar are a team of passionate servants of God who consider it a privilege to be working with children. Our goal is to educate children who are first generation learners of families below the poverty line and broken families by addressing the major hurdles faced by them namely:
(1) lack of motivation,
(2) prohibitive cost, and
(3) lack of family support in terms of means, morale and methods.
Our dream is to develop and integrate these children into the main stream of our nation as responsible citizens representing Christ.
Zamar started in the year 2004 with 30 children with 2 teachers and 2 support staff in a rented premises. The present strength is 570 children with 28 teachers and 31 non teaching staffs. Currently, we have classes from L.Kg(lower-kindergarten) to standard 12th. We have experienced tremendous progress during these years of our work in terms of motivation, language skills, and overall development of these children.
The Zamar Story.
The beginning of a dream is always a curious thing. Zamar is a product of a beautiful legacy, a legacy that rose from brokenness and ashes. Only God, our father brings out such beauty from what was once ashes. The founders Mr. Durai Samson and Mrs. Regina Samson have a beautiful vision. A vision where children who lack opportunities are equipped with opportunities towards a brighter future through education, to become Christ-centered individuals and responsible citizens who shine for Him. When God brings about a powerful vision like that, it would definitely involve a brilliant story.
Mrs.Regina Samson was brought up by an incredible Woman in the Lord Jesus Christ, Sis. Bakiyathai.
Sis. Bakiyathai had started serving the Lord ever since she was 19. She had raised Regina and many other girls during a time where a Girl child was considered a burden and Female Infanticide was rampant. She not only raised them, she gave them an education, made sure they had a career and married them off just like a parent would. Growing up under her influence Regina developed a strong passion for the poor and the need for education.
Mr.Durai Samson on the other hand who is a singer and musician, was driven by a passion for God as worship leader and his heart for the needy and poor people. This passion led him to take up Theological studies. He is easily moved by needs of the poor. It was during their college years they had met each other and later on married.
Life is never easy for people who dare to fulfill what God has set in their hearts, the world will almost always discourage them. This was the same in the case of Zamar too, ever since the idea was conceived it was never a smooth journey but always a hopeful one.
In 2004, Zamar began in a 2000sqft house on rent, with 30 children with 2 teachers and 2 support staff.
By the end of the academic year in 2008, there was no place to go, no address to give the parents, a terrible financial crunch and an almost impossible situation was at hand. Regina and Samson had nowhere else to turn to but God. The two of them went to a place where no one could hear them and cried out to God, to show them a way. Hope came in the form of a promise from the book of Isaiah and an association with Wellspring International(a unit of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries)...once again we dared to dream…once again we realize that it's not just our dream, it’s a God's Plan and Vision for His children.
We thank God for our dear friend Naomi Zacharias Director of Wellspring International, who met us at a time of our need and saw the vision set in our hearts. This was a breakthrough for Zamar and all the people involved in upholding the cause of Zamar in their prayers. Zamar is 10 years old now and it is God that leads us daily to put smiles on these children’s faces and hope in their hearts. A hope that is not one that fades but a 'Hope' that is eternal. We thank God for all the well wishers and Sponsors involved with Zamar, your encouragement has been an instrument in changing lives.
We were up and running again towards our goal with a new address of 4000 sqft and a play area donated by Mr.Seth and Mrs. Lourie Seth through Wellspring International, at Thiruverkadu, with our first bus to transport children provided by Sponsors at Wellspring, we managed 4 very fulfilling years, and yet we knew in our hearts that this was not a permanent solution.
Today we stand on a land and building with thankful hearts to God The Father and to our Lord Jesus Christ who has answered our prayers and expectations solely through loving sponsors of Wellspring International. We are humbled by God's Love for the precious children of Zamar. Each one of them is hand-picked by God and has an incredible story to tell. It is an honor to be a part of their lives.
